One of my favourite plants I've been growing is Tradescantia zebrina, one of a number of species commonly known as Spiderworts or Wandering Jews. Their leaves display a beautiful striped pattern of purple, white, and green. They are hardy, fast growing plants that are easy to keep as houseplants but also are nontoxic and make an excellent addition to any live planted gecko terrarium! I am currently in the process of propagating my potted plant to grow a few for an upcoming terrarium build, so I thought I would share my progress.
It was a very easy process, I simply took a couple of cuttings and left them in water. To prepare the cuttings, select a stalk of new, fresh growth on your plant. Using new growth should ensure your cutting grows faster. Cut about 5 inches off and keep about 4 leaves on the cutting. You will also need to ensure that at least one node on the bottom is free from leaves because this is where new roots will grow from. Make sure you don't cut off too much of the original plant or it may not survive!
The next step is just to leave your cuttings in water, which will stimulate root growth. It only takes a day or two to see progress! The photo of root growth above is about 4 days of growth. After about a week of root growth, you have successfully propagated a Wandering Jew, and you can plant it in your terrarium! I'm very excited to see how these plants do in my terrarium setup.
